Calcite Dichroscope
approved by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain

Pleochroism is the property of some crystals to exhibit different colors when viewed through different axes. The dichroscope has two different rectangular windows side by side. To use it, a gemstone is held up to the dichroscope and strongly illuminated from the back and the dichroscope is slowly rotated. The colors (and number of colors) seen are used as an aid to identification of similarly colored stones.

Chelsea Color Filter
approved by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain

Originally created to distinguish emeralds from imitations and doublets. Only deep red and yellow-green light can pass through the filter. The filter should be held close to the eye while examining brightly lit stones. Under these conditions, emeralds will look red or pinkish. Imitations look green. (Note that this is only a rough test. Some natural emeralds may not appear pink under the Chelsea filter while some synthetics may.) Other stones that can be examined with the Chelsea color filter are ruby and sapphire.
